Bonsai

Far too many Bonsai trees die or become out of shape and ugly because their owners lack a basic understanding of the really very simple concept of copying nature's own methods of keeping plants very small. There is no magic about it. The needs of the plant in the confined space in which it growing : the controlling and guiding of the top growth .......branches, twigs, and leaves, and ensuring the provision of basic plant needs, are all matters of ordinary common sense, and well within the capability of the average British gardener.

Like many things, it is easy when you know how !

Garden Bonsai

'Bonsai' is not just for trees growing in small or shallow pots and dishes, they can be grown in large pots in the open garden and in the ground too. In the garden, Bonsai styling techniques can be used to transform old, neglected or otherwise ugly trees and/or shrubs into, at least something more interesting and at best something beautiful.

Styling conventions and aesthetic considerations can be easily appreciated by anyone interested in the topic. Bonsai is not just for potted trees, although in large pots they can make an easy and very effective feature in your garden. Even for trees and shrubs planted in the ground 'pruning for shape' can be very effective. They may give the illusion of great age and character, or youth and vitality, can be used to create a style or 'feel' in a garden. Many common and widely available trees or shrubs can be pruned to give beautiful specimens for a very modest outlay

Price Guide

The value of a bonsai depends upon several factors - it's age - type of tree - the ease or difficulty of propagation, early training and cultivation and speed of growth - the quality and size of the pot is also a big contributory factor.

Prices vary enormously depending upon the above considerations, this is only a rough guide, but a fairly easily propagated young tree will cost about £1 per year in a non-ceramic container. Suitable trees can be re- potted into your own pots.

Mature young trees in an average ceramic pot will cost about £1 per year of age, plus the value of the pot, which could vary from £2-3 through £3-6 for a good - 2" - 6" dish.
